As 2022 comes to a close, there is so much that we have learned and so many opportunities taken, and one of those leaps of opportunity was teaming up with Avium and Caravan Studio to build a metaverse entertainment brand leveraging on the web3 and blockchain infrastructure.

Origins is the debut of Avium’s IP and content publishing pillar, which is focused on creating original stories and iconic characters within the Web3 dimension. This project is landmarked to be our studio’s first venture into the Web3 space and has recently premiered across all social media platforms and had an amazing response from the crowd with over 15k views in just over 24 hours! As an animation company, it is very well known that it is every studio’s dream to be building their brand, developing and having full fledged IP for the world to enjoy.

Not just a one-off project, but a full-fledged IP, we weren’t only involved in the production of the trailer, but we were actually involved in the entire process of the project, from start to finish. We had many meetings online, across Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia brainstorming with the team on the story line, helping Caravan Studio to develop the characters’ design and frequent meetings with the Avium team to push and ensure the quality of our work.
“There is much to be proud of for the success of this trailer but it didn’t come without its set of challenges. Not only were we working on a tight schedule, where we had spent about 4 months in production, but our team had to juggle between creating Origins and managing other ongoing projects, but we managed to pull through!” – Kenji Lee, Head Of Production
With Kenji Lee as the Head of Production for this project he was in charge of overseeing the team’s work across all departments, troubleshooting, quality checking and helping out wherever he can within the animation team and holistically bringing all the work of the creative together in harmony to create the spectacular trailer that you see today.

What really gave us a big hand in being able to churn out this trailer in a whopping 4 months was our use of Unreal Engine and its Real-time technology. This meant that throughout the production, as each scene was developed, whether it had to do with lighting, camera angles, and post effects it was all done in real time and the concept can come together in minutes rather than hours or days. The deal breaker for this was that in working in a HUGE team brimming with interesting ideas, any changes suggested during meetings can immediately be added to see how they work within a specific scene. With the time saved, and an infinite amount of ideas that can be experimented within minutes, creating the best possible scene, which alternatively might have taken weeks if done within a traditional pipeline.
Another challenge we faced was that our entire team was working remotely for the entirety of the project with the ongoing renovation of our office and the pandemic impending on us. On top of that, we were also liaising with artists working remotely from home and across South East Asia, but we managed to handle all the obstacles and come together to create this trailer purely based on experience and the trust we have for each and every artist to do their part.
What contributed to the management of that challenge was that in conducting Origins entirely within Unreal Engine itself, it meant that there was no compositing throughout the production removing the necessity to export render passes that had to be recompiled. With the engine being able to fully use in-camera techniques – from fog, motion blur, depth-of-field, we could cut out compositing entirely as everything we needed was right at our fingertips within one software.
Without compositing and the ease of the project only requiring ONE engine, it streamlined our process tremendously in terms of workflow and the exchange of materials because our project was entirely conducted over a cloud. As our artists communicated with the teams across the region, if it was required for any scene to have different lighting, color schemes, and camera angles, it could all be done over the cloud in real-time, achieving startling levels of detail without the use of compositing and the hassle of transferring multiple files and reworking many assets just to alter a specific scene or shot.

Hardships aside, this is only just the beginning of Avium’s story, and down the road there will be more spectacular content coming from Circle Studio, Avium and Caravan such as comics, animated series, animated features, games and more. With Avium, our mission is to create an open-metaverse ecosystem, enabling accessibility for millions regardless of background and origins by creating, developing and acquiring IP across countries in Southeast Asia to bring the true SEA culture to the forefront.
Coupled with the power of Unreal Engine, venturing into the world of building a metaverse became a dream within our reach because of its real time technology and transmedia assets, which meant that the very same assets in our production is ready to be used in cinema, trailers, video games and social media, over multiple platforms and formats. With this project being our springboard of opportunity, the capabilities of this software in conjunction with the bright minds of our team we hope that one day we are able to create more renowned IP content in the future.
